Five medals at the Northern U15/17 Championships

While all eyes were on the World Athletic Championships in Moscow it was business as usual for local athletes at the Under15 and Under 17 Northern Championships in Liverpool`s Wavertree Stadium. There was only a modest entry from the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton club but nevertheless there was a five medal haul. Amelia McLaughlin has waited for a couple of years to improve on her personal best in the High Jump but she at last came good with a leap of 1.76m and a narrow miss at 1.79m. The U17 athlete was an easy winner of the title and commented `I`m really very happy with my new personal best but even happier at nearly getting 1.79m. I`m now looking forward to the English Championships at Bedford at the end of the month’. It goes without saying that this leap is a new club record.

Joe Milton has had a phenomenal season having already taken the English Schools 300m title. Here again he demonstrated his calm fluid style to collect the gold, his time of 37.48 reflecting the poor conditions for sprinters. Ed Latimer must have been watching the World Championships and appreciating the value of a late dip. In the same U15 race he put this into practice and took the bronze medal in 38.82 as a result.

In the U17 1500m international Rosie Johnson did not follow her usual tactics of sitting in and boldly took the lead. It fell to Amy Hinchly to trail her and engage the LPS star  in a nail biting finish. The Vale Royal girl just edged it with 4.44.09 to Rosie`s 4.44.29. Rosie is a great racer and will take this experience to heart as she too heads for the national championships at Bedford. A silver medal also fell to U15 Morgan Greaves-Thomas, having an excellent season,  in the 100m where his 12.01 reflected the windy conditions. Also at Wavertree U17 Alex Higham made the final of the 200m finishing fifth with 24.25 but U15 Evelyn Smalley did not progress beyond her 200m heat in 28.09. Results
