Disappointment in National 12 Stage Relay, Good Day at Bebbibgton as LPS win in style

April 2001

A great performance on 29th April by the men's track and field junior squad saw them comprehensively win the first fixture in the Mersey Division of the National Junior Athletic Michael Ziam Bebbington 29 April 2001 League at the Bebington Oval. A combined score of 379 points left their nearest rivals West Chehire and Wirral trailing by over 100 points in a match where every LPS athlete could be proud of their achievements. Highlights included a sprint double and two PB's from Michael Zaim, PB's from Matthew Atkinson in the javelin and from Paul Edwards in the long jump and a terrific 4 x 100m relay win by the sprint team.  Although the squad lacked field competitors, enough of the lads volunteered for both the A and B categories in every event and earned valuable points towards the total.  It was a magnificent team effort and would have been better still if someone had remembered to bring the pole for the pole vault!

Disappointment in 12 Stage Relay(28-4-01) LPS failed to finish a team in the National 12 stage relay at Birmingham. Club Captain Jim elected to run a similar team to Leeds, although without fastest man at Leeds Nathan missing, due to him still recovering from last weeks London marathon added to Jim's problems. A team on paper but in reality we ended up with only 10 stages completed. John Kilbane failed to show up and with only eleven runners Peter Normile who had made the long journey decided to get home early to catch up on his collage work. The disappointment of all who had made the long journey was clear.
In what was a poor day for Liverpool clubs Liverpool Harriers had themselves disqualified on stage 4 for running Phil McGlory who is an under 17 . Wirral carried the Merseyside flag by being our only finishers in 56th place Results
Good times in bad weather (22-4-01) Atrocious weather conditions onPhil Taylor PB at Wavertree Sunday 22nd April were not conducive towards top class performances.  However, in the Melborne Cup held at Wavertree,  Phil Taylor (50.6 secs), Michael Zaim (52.1 secs)  and Dave Stroud (56.4 secs) all achieved PB's in the Men's 400 metres.
Also, in the U15 long jump, more PB's were collected by Joey Wegrzyn (4.92 metres) and John Edwards (4.6 metres).  With the new Track & Field season only just beginning, these results look very promising and given fair weather conditions and good competition all the lads can confidently look forward to notching up further improvements over the coming months.

Under 17s just miss out on medals (8-4-01) In a battle to the line LPS under 17 men just missed out on bronze medals at the national by 2 seconds! Dan Taylor, Alan Stewart, Mark Donoghue & Henry Stewart who have been missing out on the medals all season will have the consolation of knowing they are one of the most improved squads and should be making a big impression this summer on the track. the under 17 Ladies had a solid run coming home 15 with Nicola Gunderson, Amy Potter and Laura Davenport. The under 15 girls came home in 12 place with Kiera Vogel running the 7th fastest time of the day. The under 15 boys came home in 21 place. The under 13 girls ran out in 50 place and the under 13 boys came home in 13th spot. Results
20 team in Northern 12 Stage Relay(7-4-01) In bitterly cold conditions LPS came home 20th in the Northern 12 stage relay at Leeds. This ensured Sammy Rashid a long leg at Leeds qualification for the National 12 stage later this month. Getting away to a good start Nathan Vengdaslerm brought home in 6th place, solid packing saw us ahead of Liverpool Harriers until the 9 stage when lead us for the first time a stronger tail saw Liverpool get away over the last two legs. Team captain Jim Eden will have the under 17 men's squad at his disposal for the national which should see club Secretary Robbie Wood out of the squad.  Results
