Juniors
win Premier match at Oval 28 July
Somewhat overshadowed by the Commonwealth Games Liverpool Pembroke
Sefton contested the Final National Junior League (Under 20) match at
Bebington, famous as the centrepiece of the film Chariots of Fire.
Writes Charles GainsIt was to
witness similar heroics as the Men's team took on the powerful
Manchester outfit, Trafford AC, who have dominated all season. But the
local club dug very deep indeed. Never out of the first three in the
track programme there was a great 22.2 200m from Phil Taylor and an
excellent 51.9 400m from David Stroud, chopping a huge margin of his
personal best. Danny Holland backed up Phil with two seconds in the both
sprint events. In the 800 we picked up points with an A string third
with Chris Watson in 2:01:3 and a win in the B string from Alan Stewart
in 2:03:1Valauable points in the 1500 with Tom Wade third in the A
string in 4:22:1 and Alex Spencer winning the B string in 4:26:0.
Maximum points in the 3000 with Dan Taylor in 9:28:0 and Steve Donegan
9:48:6 winning their A & B string events. Mark Doneghue proved his worth
with a second place in the 400 hurdles, only to surpass this in the 2000
steeplechase in which we picked up maximum points again in the
2000 steeplechase. Mark Doneghue now with fresh legs once again won in
6:32:3 and Henry Stewart won the B string in the same time.
In the field Tony Gallagher also a plus to any team showed he still has
what it takes to impress at athletics with a second A string placing in
three events! Discus with 41:74, shot 13:26 and hammer 39:75.
Adam Chung picked up second B string in Discus, then went on to win two
B strings with a 23:35 hammer and a 9:35 shot. David Stroud won the B
string triple jump with a jump off 11:05. with Ian Milsom jumping 11:35
for third place in the A string. The relays also provided us with
maximum points with wins in both 4x100 in 44:9 & 4x400 in 3:29:1
At the same venue the Women's team were very much under strength but
Kiera Vogel and Nicola Bear ran good 800m races to win as did Marie
Barrett in the 3000m. In the field Kerri Massey threw 30.9m to take the
Javelin. The overall 4th place was satisfactory in the circumstances. |
Robbie
tackles Snowdon again! 27 July It was the 27th running of
this popular mountain race which attracts International teams from all
the home countries plus a team from Italy. Not as warm as last year with
quite a breeze and a cloud cover on the summit. It is a hard slog this
race and the inevitability of gradualness combined with a lack of
fitness and an extra two stones combined to make this his slowest ever
Snowdon race. Robbie must have run almost 20 of these Snowdon races
which comprises running 5 miles up and 5 miles
down with a climb of 3365 feet. Robbie summit time of 65.30 and a
finishing time of 1 hour 45.27 .
Also running was ex LPS runner Brian Davey SWAC who ran 1 hour 32

Gill Darby 4th lady in South Liverpool 5
24July
Gill Darby was 4th lady at Sefton Park. This popular event seemed to
sufferer from the late availability of entry forms. Although running
well Gill is finding it tough to beat husband Sam who is also enjoying a
purple patch. Gill time of 33:40 was enough for 4th place.
John Kilbane lead home the handful of LPS male athletes who turned out
on a pleasant summer's evening at Sefton Park. John ran 26.52 to finish
7th, next was Bernie Murphy running his slowest ever 5 mile race was
10th in 27:40. Mark Bleasdale was 19th in 28.40.Next was Sam Darby who
is running very well at present he was 59th in 32.11. Running in his new
LPS was Pembroke old boy Billy Furey not far off the V/70 he was
130 in 36.58, and chasing him home was Joe McAloon 191st in 45:38

National Title for Marie Barrett. 24 July
Maria Barrett won the British Biathlon title at the weekend. Competing
in the under 19 age group Marie had to complete a 1500 m swim across a
lake then straight into a 1500 run. This a a major boost for Marie who
will be looking to build on this victory over the coming season. |
Rimmer wins schools International 21 July
It is easy to run out of superlatives in
describing Michael Rimmer's season. Donning an England vest in Glasgow
for the Schools International he comfortably destroyed a class field in
winning the Inter 800m in 1.53 and the season is not yet over! There
will be an opportunity to improve on his personal best in the AAA of
England Championships in mid- August and few would bet against him doing
just that. |
Boys second at Cudworth
(21 July)
The final match in the Young Athletes League
took Liverpool Pembroke Sefton to Cudworth in Yorkshire. Writes Charles Gains
Hit by holiday absences the club was far from
full strength but the team spirit evident throughout the season saw
them finish second Gateshead 272, LPS 174, Chesterfield
162 SWAC 140.
Under 17 wins for Andrew Donaldson 1,500, Robert Stocks 3000,
Andrew Wignall 100h in 14.8 David Philips in 2k steeplechase and Ryan
Mitchell & Ryan Craig in A&B Hammer
Under 15 wins for Liam Wignall long jump 5.41, James Grocott
400 in 59.2, Thomas Daniels 400 B in 59.4, John Edwards javelin 31.55m
and Chris Bennett 100 in 12.2
Under 13 wins for Sam Hutchinson 1500 in 5.02.9, Andrew Livesey
1500 B in 5.12.8,(21 seconds off his pb!) Matthew Munn 100 in 14.4,
(debut for the club) and Joseph Newbold`s Under 13 victory in
2.31(debut for the club)
Pride of the sprint performances came
from Matthew Munn who took the Under 13 100m. Also victors in the
Under 17 age group were 200m runners Adam Morris and Dave Stroud both
in personal bests of 24.1 and 24.3 respectively.
The club's reputation at 800m was further
enhanced by Ben Johnson`s Under 15 800m in 2.17.5 . Overall the club has now finished in 6th
place in the tough Northern Premier League, a position they have
occupied for the last two years. Weaknesses in certain events such as
the Pole Vault only prevent the club from finishing a place or two
higher and qualifying for the prestigious National Cup finals. This
will no doubt be addressed by the coaches this winter. Fortunately the
first of the specialist strength and agility equipment, a result of a
successful Lottery bid, has begun to arrive at the Edge Hill track.
This will considerably enhance the quality and variety of training
available.

Rimmer smashes Winrow`s record 13
July
After
Michael Rimmer`s stunning performance in Italy when he took second
place in an Under 20 international match it might be expected that he
would take it easy at the English Schools Championships at Nottingham.
Writes Charles Gains
This was not the case as the 16 year old raced to success in the
Intermediate 800m half the straight in front of the next competitor.
It was a performance that brought the crowd to its feet roaring
encouragement. In recording 1.50.9 the Ormskirk based athlete erased
the previous best set 14 years ago, ironically, by Burscough`s Craig
Winrow who now coaches in the United States.
Rimmer though was not alone in terms of
local success as Phil Taylor recorded an outstanding 48.6 in the 400m
collecting the bronze medal. The Ormskirk School athlete grows in
maturity every time out and will surely join Rimmer shortly in
collecting an international vest. A little overshadowed by all this
were the excellent placings of 5th in the 3000m by Kiera Vogel and the
9th position of Mark Donoghue in the Steeplechase. Officers of Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton are delighted that the decision to base their
track and field headquarters at Edge Hill College is reaping such rich
dividends. Results

Rimmer
reaps the Rewards 7 July 2002
Michael
Rimmer making his first junior International debut at sixteen years of
age finished second in the three-way match in Italy. Having won the
silver medal at last weekends AAA under 20 championships Michael was
rewarded with his first UK junior vest for the match with Italy and
Spain.
After a slow first lap of
59.8 it was burn up on the last lap. Michael run 1.53.85 behind Salvador
Crespro of Spain who won in 1.52.95.
Michael who holds a number of UK age best for 800m had been planning
along with his coach John Bradshaw for a junior call up some time this
summer. “I was happy that Michael got this opportunity although not
surprised given his form this season,
we still have another three years before we move into the seniors and we
are looking for the right competition to help bring Michael on. It is a
fitting reward.” Said John, who coaches a number of other talented LPS
young athletes. Results
