Difficult time at National 6 Stage 25 Oct
The Relay season was always going to be an uphill struggle after a difficult time at
Sefton Park. When you have only the minimum number on the Monday before
the event it never looks good. Bernie Murphy had even asked the Club
Secretary to bring his kit just in case he was needed but alas the
Secretary was busy at home and could not travel this year after stepping
in at the last minute last season. In the end we were a runners short for
a complete team. Well done to all the lads who travelled down to
Birmingham and got a run although

LPS senior forced into second place. 19
Oct
Liverpool Harriers proved to strong at the opening Reebok fixture at
Sefton Park. Packing 6 in the first 12 it was always going to difficult to
beat. We did however pack our 6 in 24 so with two fixtures left it is all
to play fore. Paul Cadwallader lead us home in second place with from
Henry Stewart, Sammy Rashid, Mark Donghue, Des McIvor and Adam Clancy we
did have a young feel to the team with three of the six being juniors.
Mike Rimmer won the U/17s race with Robert stocks second and Paul McHugh
forth. In the U/15s Chris Melling and David Furlong came home third and
forth. Robert McLauglin was our lead runner in the U/13 in 4th place

Award for Albert 9 Oct
After a lifetime in the sport Albert Knowles was acknowledged by the North
of England in the form of an annual merit award at their AGM on the 5th
October. It is a great honour not only for Albert but also the club Well
done Albert and thank you for all the effort you have put back into the
sport.
Citation
Albert has spent a lifetime in athletics. He came
into the sport in the late 1940s after taking part in the local Boys Brigade
Cross Country. He joined Boundary Harriers and ran with them for a number of
years before he joining Waterloo Harriers..
Bertie remained with Waterloo until the early 1970s when they merged with
Southport. Along with a number of other ex Waterloo members, Bertie joined
Sefton Harriers. He has remained a member ever since and this time embraced the
merger with Liverpool Pembroke in 1995.
Bertie enjoyed a long and happy career, as an
endurance athlete. He took part in many marathons and cross-country events,
always willing to travel to the National Cross Country Championships.
Having enjoyed himself as an athlete Bertie then
proceeded to put back something into the sport he loved so much. This began with
coaching at Netherley, Kirkby and Crosby in the early 80s.
To help Sefton Harriers pick up officials points at Northern league fixtures
Bertie began his next athletics career as a starter. It is as a starter that
most members of the athletics fraternity know him. He is to be seen at almost
every athletics event held within Merseyside. Sports Hall, Schools, Disabled,
Liverpool & District Cross Country Union and the County AA have all been regular
beneficiaries of Bertie’s work.
It would be difficult to name another official who has attended as many meetings
as Bertie over the last fifteen years. His willingness to help and his early
arrivals at fixtures are well known. All this is done by the use of public
transport, as Bertie does not drive!
In an age when we witness a tendency to consume without a thought of also
putting back, it is refreshing to see the Berties of this world buck the trend
and give back more than they ever took out of the sport.
