Senior Men 10th in Northern Relay

 On
a perfect afternoon for running, our senior men once again qualified for
the National 6 stage relays next month at Sutton Coalfield. The North of
England six stage relay was once again held a Sefton Park and was well
supported by local clubs. The A team was lead off by Sammy Rashid who once
again made the trip over from Sheffield to compete for the club. Sammy
worked hard and came in just behind Liverpool Harrier Phil McGlory. Des
McIivor after running anchor last Saturday at Stockport ran a steady
opening leg for the B team. Paul Cadwallader went off with Glen Groves but
this time Glen got the better and Liverpool Harriers had established a 50
metre lead at the end of leg two. Jim Eden went on two for the B team and
worked hard. Stage three was the turn of in form Bernie Murphy who was
able to overhaul Liverpool Harriers and hand over to Tom Snape who
maintained our lead over Liverpool Harriers. Mark Bleasdale went off on
this leg for the B team. Joey Parkinson was next off and he held off a
strong challenge from Rob Cushion. Long lost and not very often seen Chris
Henry was next for the B team (Nice to see you running again Chris). New boy Bill Yoxall had his first taste
of relay running on this stage for the B team. All was set for the last
leg with Alan Woods taking over with a fifty metre lead over ex LPS old
boy Richie Shearer on the last leg for Liverpool. Richie will not catch
and past Alan Woods many times during his athletics career but this was
one of them and Liverpool Harriers turned the tables on us from last week
with a narrow but well earned win. We finished 10th 5 minutes and 59
seconds behind winners Salford

Senior Men win Merseyside County Relay
title 21 Sept
 LPS
senior men took the County Road Relay title in the combined North West
Relays held in Stockport. Finishing 5th overall LPS beat Liverpool
Harriers to take the Merseyside crown. This years relays saw a departure
from the normal six stages to a new four stage race. Sammy Rashid went off
on leg one and ran 21:11 bring us in 6th place, next was in form Bernie Murphy who ran 20:21
and brought us in first place after a storming run which was the 5th
fastest time of the day. An under
the weather Joey Parkinson ran 21:42 on leg three and handed over in
second place to Des McIvor who ran 22:09 to hold off Liverpool
Harriers on leg four to bring us in a total time of 1:25:23. The event was
won by Salford Harriers in 1:23:25

4th Place at Promotion Match
15 September
After a long season our Junior Men's team had one last fixture at
Cleckheaton for the Promotion match to the national Junior League. Despite
having our weakest team of the season we still finished in 4th place and
ahead of our main rivals Trafford. Gateshead won the fixture and can look
forward a lot more travel next season. |
Bernie Murphy wins Liverpool Corporate
Cup 8 Sept
 Bernie Murphy continued with his impressive racing form with a victory in
the 13th Liverpool Corporate Cup. Bernie's winning time was 15:34. Next
home was Joey Parkinson also enjoying a good run of form, Joey's time was
16:17
Jon Rice is down as running 17:16 on the results, I am told Mark Bleasdale
also ran although I cannot seem to find him in the results!
If Bernie and Joey can show this kind of
form in the relays we should do well.

Paul Pudney comes to grief at Vets 5k
6 Sept
Club stalwart Paul Pudney came to grief in the European Vets Champs in
Germany last month. Paul who has been running well all summer was hoping
for a medal in the 5k and was in sub 15.20 form going into the race. I
will let Paul explain what happened next.
"Well things went a bit wrong in Germany. Was with the leading group of
6/7 at
2k, on about 15min pace. Not bad considering it was over 30 degrees, in
old
money that's hot! (and pretty windy saw a triple jump when the wind was
3.5
m/s). Then got tripped from behind, fell heavily. Got up tried to run, but
new
something was wrong with my arm, had to stop again after 50m. Ended up in
hospital, I have got a fractured elbow! What is more I think I could got a
medal, third placer ended up at 15.18, although I think the heat had
something
to do with the slow time. Who said running is not a tough sport?"
It looks like Paul will be out till about Christmas. We wish him a speedy
recovery. |

Cadwallader 7th in Liverpool Half Marathon 1 Sept
Running his first half marathon for a few years Paul Cadwallader showed he
had not lost his apatite for the distance when he ran a creditable 70:08
to be the first local runner home in a field of over 1700. Paul was backed
up by Bernie Murphy (12th) 71:53 fresh from his 5k win at Walton Park on
Wednesday, John Kilbane (13th) was next running 73:01 with Joey Parkinson
(14th) in 73:29. Having placed 4 in the first 14 we once again we claimed
the team title in this event with Liverpool H second and Liverpool RC
third.

Area Vests for Laura & Phil 1
Sept
Laura Davenport and Phil Taylor made their North of
England debuts on Sunday in
the Inter Area Match at Watford. Competing in the junior match Phil was
3rd in the 400 running 50:00 while Laura was 4th in the 1500 in 5:00:00.
This we hope is a stepping stone to great honours in the future. |
