February 2004
AAA of England Indoor Title for Phil Taylor
29 February
At the AAA of England Under 20 Indoor Championships in Birmingham sprint
sensation, Phil Taylor, stunned everyone by taking the title in emphatic
style. After winning his heat in 49.77 he stepped up a gear to take the
semi-final in 49.04. But there was even more to come. He rocketed away in
the Final going through 200m in a breathtaking 22.64 and was never headed,
coming home in 48.47. Not since the days of Guy Bullock, another Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton athlete, has Ormskirk produced such an outstanding talent.
Coach, Ray Twentyman, is clearly delighted with his protégé and forecasts
some exciting times in the outdoor season. Interestingly, as Loughborough
student Taylor stepped up for his medal he found it was to be presented by
Mrs Pat Green, North of England President, and also a Life Member of
Liverpool Pembroke Sefton. Another LPS competitor, Mark Grimshaw ran a
personal best of 50.6, an excellent performance, but somewhat overshadowed
by the explosive Phil Taylor.

Indoors & On the Country LPS Athletes have busy
weekend 21 February
Phil Taylor demonstrated superb early season form with an excellent double
in the Birmingham Games Indoor meeting. After taking the Under 20 200m in
22.90 he turned his attention to the 400m and raced clear of the
opposition to record 49.92. The Loughborough student is clearly in great
shape for the coming track and field season.
The National Cross Country Championships at
Leeds against the magnificent backdrop of Temple Newsham House was the
usual display of fierce club competition. Best individual performance from
Liverpool Pembroke Sefton was the consistent Rob Stocks who finished 26th
in the Under 17 race and with Carl Williams(60), Chris Melling(124) and
Mark Leicester(152) were 11th team. In the Under 15 race in 19th team spot
were Joe McKenna(88), Joe Nelson(114), Martin Cooke(129) and Andrew
Bowen(145). The Under 20`s were led to 11th position by Henry Stewart(56)
and Steve Donegan(78), Michael Rimmer(92) and Rob Walmsley(140). The Under
13s struggled to complete a team with Dave Barber(191), Matt Lloyd(223)
and Mick McCarten(259).
The Senior Men`s potentially difficult season
was completed in fine style with the club finishing 35th team out of 116
and the following placing out of 1400 competitors, Jimmy Boardman(151),
Steve Freeman(231), Adam Clansey(261), Sammy Rashid(321), Luke
Sanders(534) and Jeff Mason(566). Among the club`s women performers in the
Under 20 race Maria Barrett(40) unexpectedly beat Kiera Vogel(44). Erin
Halsall was 86th in her race and Emma Bowen 107 in the Under 13s.

Rimmer Shines on the Country 14 February
The
penultimate Mid-Lancs Cross Country League match was held at Astley Park,
Chorley. Liverpool Pembroke Sefton 800m international, Michael Rimmer,
rarely wins over the country but on this occasion he took the Under 20 race.
His preparation for the World Junior Championships later in the year shows
he is on course for another great track and field season. Team mate Steve
Doneghan finished 4th. In the Senior race Jimmy Boardman was also 4th.
The Under 17s were again first with Carl Williams(4), Chris Melling(5) and
Mark Leicester(8). The League title looks assured. Elsewhere the Under 15s
were second, Andrew Bowen(7), Martin Cooke(15), Joe McKenna(17) and Russell
Irving(22). The first Under 13 runner was Jack Helm(23). The final match is
in March at Leyland and the Ormskirk based squad are on course for two first
team places, a second and third. Coach, John Bradshaw, would be satisfied
with that sort of season.

Rob Stocks races to second spot
7 February
A big win still eludes Rob Stocks who finished
a very good second in the Senior Lancashire Schools Cross Country
Championships at Blackburn. The Runshaw College student has a drawer full
of silver and bronze medals but his talent and persistence will surely
lead to the gold eventually. At the Inter-level Chris Melling(9), David
Wilkie(16) and Sam Glynn(19) helped the West Lancashire team to bronze
medals. Andrew Bowen was a good 5th at in the Junior race but the West
Lancs team slipped to fourth spot. Year 7 provided a surprise victory for
West Lancashire with Jason Newall(8), Josh Morris(11) and Jake Helm(14).
The next outing for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton club is the Mid-Lancs
League at Astley Park, Chorley
