North of England Cross Country Championships 29 January
Local athletes made the long trip to Consett, County Durham for the Northern Cross Country Championships. The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton quartet had an outside chance of medals in the Under 13 race but Jake Helm(16), Chris Hesketh(37), Mike McCarten(64) and Jason Newell(91) could only manage 5th team. In the equivalent Girls race Emma Bowen(39), Abby Bridgeman(70), Vicky Swift(86) and Nuala Maher(125) were a respectable 13th.

Incomplete teams characterised the rest of the day. Andrew Bowen(25) and Kieron Sloan(71) at Under 15 were two short and Joe McKenna(77), Martin Cooke(95) and Matt Brooks(110) searched for a final counter in the Under 17 race. In the Junior test Michael Rimmer(57) and Carl Williams(58) simply ran together. The most frustrating event was the Senior Men. In a massive field Jimmy Boardman(45) ran easily but there was some excellent performances going on behind him. Ever-reliable Sammy Rashid was on 111 but the run of the day came from Steve Donegan at 121 with an almost equally strong 135 from Colin Jones. Missing athletes would have carried LPS into the top dozen clubs in the North and gone a long way to restoring club pride. However, the National Championships are still to come and these efforts will spur the club on.

Ray Twentman, Mark Grimshaw, Tricia FarrellAt the North of England Athletic Association Indoor Junior Championships at Sheffield the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athlete, Mark Grimshaw, took the Under 20 400m gold medal in fine style. The Head Boy of Ormskirk School raced home in an excellent 49.6. A product of the high quality Edge Hill College based sprint squad coached by Ray Tewntyman and Tricia Farrell he was not alone in the medal hunt as Harry Doran collected silver in the Under 15 200m in an eye-catching 23.9. To complete an excellent weekend  for the local club Up Holland's Jack McGann was bronze madallist in the Under 17 400m in 52.75. Mid Lancs Cross Country 22 January
Tarleton High School pupil, Jake Helm, is fast emerging as a quality distance runner. Last track and field season he recorded 4.49.3 at 1500m to get inside the country's top 20 performance list. This cross-country season with his Liverpool Pembroke Sefton team mates he has already collected a bronze medal in the National Under 13 Cross Country Relays and finished individual runner-up in the Lancashire Championships while collecting a team gold. He recently travelled to Kendal for a regular Mid-Lancashire League match and easily ran away from the field to comfortably win. Mike McCarten(6) and Jason Newell(11) were also in close attendance. At full strength the LPS squad will be looking to the Northern and National Championships with some relish. Also at Kendal the Under 15 Boys were second team, led home by Andrew Bowen(3) followed by Kieron Sloan(10), Matt Lloyd(26) and Tom Hanlon(35).

County Cross Country Championships 15 January
The County Cross Country Championships are the first of the serious events of the New Year and indicate club and individual prospects in the forthcoming Northern and National Championships. Liverpool Pembroke Sefton are always split at this time with half the club at the Lancashire's in Blackburn and the Merseyside contingent at Birkenhead's Arrowe Park. The only team victory of the day came at Blackburn as Jake Helm(2), Mike McCarten(4), Jason Newell(9) and Chris Hutton(26) took the Under 13 gold. Other prominent performers were Andrew Bowen(5) in the Under 17 race and an astonishing run from Rob Stocks who took the bronze in the Junior event. More predictably Courtney Birch showed her style in also taking third place in the Senior Women's race.

At Arrowe Park by far the best result was Maria Barrett who was untroubled in seizing the Under 20 title. Maria is an ultra-consistent athlete who trains hard and deserves every success. Elsewhere Chris Hesketh (Under 13) was out sprinted in a tight finish and was third. Kieron Sloan was a good 8th in the Under 15 category and the solid trio of Martin Cooke(12), Joe McKenna(13) and Matt Brooks(15) were unlucky not to have been able to field a 4th counter, otherwise medals beckoned here. In the Junior race Carl Williams(7) looked good followed home by Michael Rimmer(8).

The Senior Men provided a most intriguing encounter. Still short of star Jimmy Boardman nothing was expected but some excellent team packing brought third placing. Adam Clansey(10) and Colin Jones(16) were the spearhead with vet Graham Cairns(18) nearly chasing Colin down. Steve Donegan(20) was followed by another amazing vet Jeff Mason(30) and it was left to Newburgh's Clive Parry(36) to close in a mere three points ahead of the St Helen's outfit. It is Clive's first season and his first medal. Even the seventh man Kevin Carroll collected a vets award so everybody went home delighted.

Jimmy Boardman in action for the North of EnglandLiverpool & District Cross country Championships 9 January

Flu deprived Liverpool Pembroke Sefton of their premier cross country runner, Jimmy Boardman, in the Liverpool and District Championships in Allerton. Other runners were also under weather and the club could only manage 4th team placing. Adam Clansey was 12th followed by Steve Donegan(21) who was closely shadowed by 800m international track star Michael Rimmer(24). Michael does not enjoy cross country but is, nevertheless, a useful performer. Colin Jones(26) was clearly disappointed after some good early season races. It was left to the consistent veteran Graham Cairns(31) and Newburgh`s Clive Parry(53) to close in. Clive outsprinted another evergreen veteran Kevin Carroll(54). Additional finishers for the club were Robbie Wood(88) and newcomer Paul Young(125) Results
