North of England Junior Championships Two Golds and a Bronze 29 May

The Northern Junior Track and Field Championships at Cudworth saw local club Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton gain two gold and a bronze medal. At Under 20 Michael Rimmer`s quest for a medal in the forthcoming European Championships remains on course as he easily took the title. After recent personal bests at 400m and 1500m he returned to his favourite 800m and recorded 1.51.50. The week before at Manchester's Sport City he had dipped under the magic 1.50 and has thus satisfied the selectors. This promises to be an even better season for the athlete who already is bronze medallist at the equivalent Commonwealth level.

Ormkskirk's Mark Grimshaw was also on the top of the podium after taking the 400m final. In poor conditions his 49.01 was excellent. Another rising star in coach Ray Twentyman`s& Trica Farrell's sprint squad is Harry Doran, third in the Under 17 200m. LPS had plenty to celebrate this weekend.

Busy weekend for LPS athletes 22 May
A trio of great results for Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athetes characterised last weekend. International Michael Rimmer was at Manchester`s SportCity for the graded British Miler`s Club meeting. Running in the A 800m his target was 1.50m in order to duck under the European Junior qualifying time. Off the back of recent personal bests in the 400m and 1500m coach John Bradshaw was confident this was well within his reach. Accelerating with 200m to go and with a class athlete on his shoulder he stormed to a 1.49.79 clocking. The broad smile said it all.

Also in Manchester for the BUPA Great Manchester 10K was Jimmy Boardman, the club`s distance specialist. The race was won by the legendary Haile Gebrselassie in the fastest time ever run in the UK. In 20th spot in a personal best of 30.08 was Boardman whose smile matched Rimmer`s. Not to be outdone Mark Grimshaw was at Wigan for a Junior track and field match. His 49.1 400m caught the eye of officials and he was awarded Man of the Match. Inspirational results with the season still early.

County Championships 15 May
The weekend of the County Athletic Championships always produces an avalanche of quality performances and personal bests. Perhaps the most outstanding result from the view of Liverpool Pembroke Sefton was in the Merseyside Championships at Wavertree where Michael Rimmer took the Under 20 400m title in a stunning 48 seconds. Clearly his preparations are going well for the forthcoming European Junior 800m championships. Other winners at Liverpool were Steve Dignam in the Under 15 800m and Chris Hesketh at 1500m. At Blackpool for the Lancashire Championship Gold Medal and Lancashire County Champion for the Junior Women Discus was won by Natalie Walsh. Jake McGinn lowered his 400m time to 51.8 in claiming bronze and Anna Taylor and Anne-Marie Pennington had a good silver/bronze result in the Javelin. An exhilarating weekend for the local club was sealed when distance star Jimmy Boardman finished fifth in the Christelton 5K Road Race in an eye-catching 14.32.

Man of the Match Doran 8 May

Local young athletes were at Manchester`s SportCity for the first match of the Northern Premier League. The encounter was characterised by a remarkable run of victories for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton Under 15 Boys squad. Nathan Hilton and Danny Higham took both the 100m and 200m races but this was somewhat overshadowed by the really magnificent 400m victory of Harry Doran in 52.6. This result gave him the prestigious Man of the Match award. Not content with cleaning up the sprints Tom Hanlon and Joe McKenna took the 800m and 1500m and there was another inspired performance by Jake Helm at 3000m in a sub-10 minute time of 9.58. The rush of success was complete as the team combined to take both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Among the girls Ashley McComb shone with a High Jump Under 17 victory. There were personal bests everywhere in spite of the miserable conditions. Weaknesses in other age groups only prevented the club from beating the powerful Gateshead and Sale clubs but the coaches will be encouraged by this great start to the season.
