Mid Lancs 11 March
This is the time of year when local athletes begin to turn their
attention towards the forthcoming track and field season. However, for
the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton runners there were a couple of outstanding
cross country events left. In the Mid-Lancashire Cross Country League
Under 17 race at Hyndburn Martin Cooke(8), Joe McKenna(12) and Danny
Gordon(14) were a solid 2nd team. Elsewhere Michael McCarten was 14th in
the U15 race, Emma Bowen 10th in the parallel girls event and Stephanie
Swift an encouraging 4th in the U17 women's race. Runners were scarce on
the grounds as several were preparing themselves for the big
Inter-Counties event at Nottingham the following week.
Here Jake Helm had a storming run and spearheaded the Lancashire team by
finishing a highly creditable 31st in the U15s. The LPS find of the
season Michael McBride recorded an equally impressive 35th for
Merseyside at U13 level. Skelmersdale's Andrew Bowen's brave early
assault in the U17 race failed and he slipped to what for him will be a
disappointing 91st. The fixture lists now are out for the summer side of
the sport and athletes at the Edge Hill College track will be focusing
on sharpening up programmes in the next few weeks. |
