Northern Mersey Junior 29 April
The first track and field league encounter of the season was the
Northern Mersey Junior match played out at Wigan. The Liverpool Pembroke
Sefton performance was best described as solid rather that outstanding
but with several individual efforts that whetted the appetite for the
coming season. Alex Stokes took the A 100m race in a sharp 11.2 but will
probably be more satisfied with his second place in the 200m race in
22.6. Wayne Ashall was his B team mate, finishing second in the
100m(12.2) but winning the 200m in a very good 22.7. Two of the club`s
distance prospects also showed good form, Danny Gordon outclassed by the
St Helens international, David Forrester, in the 3000m but pleased with
second in 9.40.4. Andrew Bowen was similarly outpaced in the 2000m
Steeplechase by an older rival but again will look at a 6.24.1 with some
pleasure. Jakob Shaw was an A High Jump winner and with Tony West and
Andrew Taylor garnering useful points in the throwing events the club
was making progress in the match. Charlotte Christian (Hammer 34.08) and
Abby McComb (B High Jump 1.45 and B Shot Putt) were also winners among
the girls.
LPS seem to have a reputation for producing stunning performances late
in the programme and on cue Alex Stokes, Wayne Ashall, Sam Hutchinson
and Tom Daniels produced an excellent 44.7 to comfortably take the 4 x
100m relay while Wayne, Sam and Tom combined with Ross Nelms for an even
more convincing victory in the 4 x 400m relay in 3.43.3. Together this
gave the club a points total that put them third on the day to Cheshire
Tigers and Wigan. Next to strut their stuff will be the Young Athletes
and the Seniors.
