Wayne Ashall in
Malta 27 April
Wayne
Ashall, the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton 400m star, was
in Malta representing a North of England team
against numerous Mediterranean countries. Hampered
by an achilles injury he still managed a fourth spot
in his favourite event with a time of 49.62 but was
also part of a victorious 4 x 100m relay squad.

Meanwhile his colleagues were at a National Junior
League match in Ellesmere Port. Among the men Jack
McGinn`s 200m in 22.9 caught the eye as did the
prolific Mike Jones who took the Shot Putt with
9.30m, the Discus with 24.13m and a useful second in
the Hammer with 33.18m. The Women as usual
garnered valuable points with Rachel Hutchinson in
particular clearing 1.90m in the Paul Vault and
throwing a personal best in the Hammer of 32.15m and
team mate Jess Broady(29m) in close attendance. The
club ran out third team on the day to North Wales
and Cheshire Tigers.
The club was also
promoting their annual 10K Road Race in Croxteth
Park, organised superbly by Robbie Wood, which
attracted over 200 runners. Graham Cairns was 7th in
36.11 and first Over 50 while Kirsty Longley
occupied 32nd position(40.32) but third in the
Women`s event. The biggest cheer though was reserved
for Joe McAloon who continues to astound at the age
of 75 completing the course with a big smile in
73.28.

Have you joined the LPS PB/08 Club?
The track and field season has hardly begun and dozens of members are
already posting personal bests. Take Rose Hutchinson's Throws Group for
example...
Out of nine members 6 have already got PBs. They are Drew Atherton(U15
Javelin 36.01m), Emma Carter(U17 Javelin 29.62m) plus four U20`s Mike
Jones (Javelin 38.44), Rachel Hutchinson(Hammer 29.38m), Emily Carr
(Javelin 32.69m) and Charlotte Christian (Hammer 35.23). Jess Broady,
Mike Jones and Kevin Jones are also poised to join the club shortly.
Charlotte Christians throw qualified her to represent the Isle of Man in
the Island Games next year but if she can pass 40m before June that will
put her in contention for spot in the Junior Commonwealth Games in India
this year. A big incentive!

Fine start to the season for LPS athletes 20 April
Traditionally the summer track and field season starts for most athletes
with the Liverpool Harriers Open Meeting at Wavertree. It was an
occasion blessed with very cold weather but there were still many
encouraging performances for the club to relish. Sarah Beth Wroblewski
(Yr 5) marked her first year in the sport with a quick 11.7 for 75m and
equally delighted was Tawanda Lungu (Yr 7) who posted 11.0 over the same
distance. Kyle Nicholls (Yr 8/9) was an untroubled winner of the 1500m
in 5.12.5 as was Joseph Hanlon (Yr 7) in taking the 800m in 3.30.8
followed by no fewer than 4 other LPS athletes( Andrew Hutchinson, Jake
Oldham, Darren McDonald and David
Reece) all under 3.47, a very encouraging sign for the
club's middle distance prospects.
Among the more senior members probably the two best performance came
from Junior Jack McGinn who took the 400m race in 50.1 and the strong
run of David Forrester in the U17 800m of 2.01.7. In the latter event
the depth of the club was again in evidence with another four runners
(Chris Hesketh, Toby Loveridge, Michael Bride and Jake Helm) under 2.13.
The club's U17 200m specialists Adam Thomson(23.3) and Callum Burns
(23.6) both looked good as did Senior Michael Zaim with an 11.4 100m and
a 22.7 200m. Junior Danny Higham will also be reasonably content with an
11.5 100m and 51.1 400m. There was no doubt though that the most
delighted athlete of the day was Junior Charlotte Christian whose Hammer
Throw of 35.23m was not only a personal best but gained her the
qualifying mark for the Isle of Man in the forthcoming `Island Olympics'
in Scandinavia.

Double Easter Victories 16 April
Two club athletes tasted individual success for the first time when they
competed in races over the Easter weekend.
On Good Friday, Ed.Rimmer (11.18) was the first home in a field of 112
in the annual Southport Fun Run. There was an excellent run too by Kyle
Nicholls (11.34) who took the bronze medal.
Over in the Isle of Man, despite facing a force 8 gale along the
promenade at Port Erin, Andrew Hutchinson competed in the Manx Harriers
Easter Festival of Races and won the boys 3K race in a time of 9.55
Murphy Top of London Charts
LPS’s Bernie Murphy claimed Merseyside bragging rates in the Flora
London marathon. Bernie completed the gruelling 26.2 mile course in a
personal best time of 2hrs.29 min.to finish in an impressive 43rd place
overall. He reached the half-way stage in 1:14.29 and despite the
testing conditions, he managed to maintain that pace throughout. Sammy
Rashid having had a difficult lead up to the event still went ahead and
completed the race in 3:37:06, which I would guess is about an hour
slower than Sammy may have hoped for given better lluck (From L,pool
Echo – James Pearce)
Throwers make the point
Liverpool Harriers held their annual Jumps & Throws meeting at Wavertree
and saw two LPS throwers set PB’s in the javelin.
Drew Atherton threw 36.01m to go straight to the U15 Power of Ten
North-West rankings.
Emma Carter also threw the javelin further than she had ever done before
with a throw of 29.57m.
