Jack leads the way on a good day 28 November

The UK Cross Country Challenge series of events reached Sefton Park
again and incorporates the European Trials. It thus attracts some of the
best harriers in the country. This year the mud made it a very demanding
course but, as usual, produced one or two pleasant surprises for the
Liverpool Pembroke Sefton contingent. In the first race, the Under 11s,
Jack Crook was always in the leading group and not overawed by the
occasion finished in an excellent 8th spot. The St Annes Ormskirk
Primary School pupil will certainly progress from this. Other team mates
were Paul Bousique(30), Charlotte Mawdsley(59) and Colin Bousique(65).
There were other good results for the club especially the Under 17 race
in which Toby Loveridge finished a sparkling 11th and first in the Mid-Lancs
League that was merged into the competition. With Jai
Vernon-McGuigan(42), Mike Bride(74), Sean Kirkbride(78) and Mike
Wilson(92) the domestic team event was assured. Also first in the local
league was Rhea Ellis(44) who looked at home in her initial year in the
Under 20 Women. Elsewhere the club completed teams with the Under 13
girls providing Charlotte Haines(53), Katie Walker(63), Georgina
Hannaway(83) and Beth Deary(96). Their Under 13 Boys counterparts had
Nathan Browne(49), Ben Haines(69), Dillan Bousique(81) and Jonathan
Bride(85). At Under 15 the boys were Warren
Turner(55), Kyle Nicholls(75), Dave Reece(80) and Darren McDonald(97)
but the U15 Girls could only field two runners Maddie Makepeace(96) and
Alicia Burke(105).
Again one of the joys of this season has been the emergence of a strong
Senior Womens group led by Kirsty Longley(60) with Lyndsay Doyle(68) and
Cath Terry(102) also in
attendance. This performance will carry them to
a very high placing in the Mid-Lancs team results. The Senior Men opt
instead for the inclusive Liverpool and District league where Bernie
Murphy led the way(166) followed by new signing Chris Pedder(212) with
Mark Salter(213) on his shoulder. There followed a useful pack of LPS
runners, Jeff Mason(254), Clark Roberts(255), Tom Hanlon(256), Sean
Dignam(260) and Rob Jowett(269). Robbie Wood was 429th. Overall a solid
performance indicating the club will probably finish fourth this season,
not yet troubling local rivals but giving at least a basis for renewed
optimism. L&D Results

Kirsty and Jai shine 15 November
Kirsty Longley and Jai Vernon-McGuigan love to compete and both had a
great weekend. Over in Ireland for the annual Hollymount Road Races
Kirsty was second in a class field of runners in the Women`s 3K race.
She was the leader of the Liverpool contingent who always make the trip
and but a mere 18 seconds in 10.39 behind Irish international Kathryn
Casserly. Kirsty goes from strength to strength.
Meanwhile in the Merseyside Schools Cross Country League Jai was
dominating the Senior Boys race on a very demanding and windswept
coastal course that included negotiating sand dunes. Vernon-McGuigan
could be one to watch as this winter season unfolds.
