Astonishing run from Jai 30 October
The first of the season's Liverpool and District
Cross Country League races was held in excellent conditions at Arrowe
Park. After a cautious start LPS's Jai Vernon-McGuigan found himself in
the leading three that began to put distance between themselves and the
rest of the field. The powerful Liverpool Harrier duo of Mellor and
McCole were always in command but the smooth and confident running of
the 17 year old ensured he was troubled by nobody else. A head turning
performance for the Chesterfield High School sixth former and a new star
on the local scene.
His run was inspirational for an LPS team that has struggled in recent
years. Ian Roberts(13), Greg Callaghan(19), Bernie Murphy(21) followed
with yet another of the emerging LPS Junior stars, Mike Bride(31),
closing in fast. The final counting position was decided in an epic
encounter between Coventry-based Clark Roberts(33), running the race of
his life, and former L & D champion Jim Boardman(34) who was warmly
welcomed back. The team was second to the Harriers but ahead of the
Wirral club. With others available this can be even better. Chris Pedder
(47), Jeff Mason(60), Robbie Woods (83), Mark Bleasdale (105) and Gary
Loveridge (112) also closed in. Results
The rest of the club was at a muddy Barrow for the first of the Mid-Lancs
League races. Making his debut in the Under 11 race Joe Martin took off
like Usain Bolt and duly paid the price but his final fourth spot was
still impressive. Only two of the potentially powerful U13 squad turned
up but both Jack Crook(4) and another debutant Liam Bibby(6) looked
good. At U15 James Grundy was an improving second with James Loftus(8)
and Jonathan Bride(23). The U17s provided the only complete team result
of the afternnon with Alistair Nelson(3), Warren Turner(7), George
Curran(18) and David Reece(23) collecting second. This, though, is an
age group LPS can win yet again. Three brave girls also performed well,
U13`s Hannah Hulme(8) and Charlotte Mawdsley(17) plus U15 Katie
Walker(20).

U13's lead the way at Sutton Park
17 October
The
high pressure National Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield can
often unnerve first timers but not LPS's Under 13 trio. Running like
clockwork Daniel Wright(14.44), Jack Crook(14.31) and Charlie
Hayward(14.38) finished an excellent 10th team against the best in the
country. First Merseyside team home this will have attracted local
attention and thrown down an early challenge to future cross country
opponents.
The Under 15`s ran soundly, James Grundy a sharp 13.17, James Loftus on
14.13 and Chris Watkinson with 14.54 combining for 27th spot. Jonathan
Bride(16.06) and Nathan Browne(16.53) also ran but without a third
runner. The U17`s were not quite at full strength and Warren
Turner(13.02), Sean Kirkbride(12.48) and Kyle Nicholls(13.53) had to
settle for 35th spot but it was encouraging that there was also a B team
on display, George Curran(14.22), Rob Parkinson(14.18) and David
Reece(15.39) finishing 61st.

Magnificent Loveridge 10
October
A magnificent run by Toby Loveridge brought
Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton home in 4th place on leg 1 at the inaugural
Northern Athletics cross country relays
held
at Graves park in Sheffield. Running for the first time in a senior
competition, despite only being a first year junior, Toby's time was the
6th fastest of the day. Accompanied by juniors Jai Vernon McGuigan
(11.10) & Mike Bride (11.49), along with senior, Ian Roberts (11.51),
the club eventually finished in 10th place.
The U17 boy's team consisting of Sean Kirkbride, Mike Wilson & Warren
Turner went one better, finishing 9th, whilst the senior women with Cat
Terry, Lisa Gawthorne & Steph Swift finished in a very creditable 11th
place.

Creditable finish for
debutants 2 October
Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton's U13 boys' team came a
very creditable 9th, out of 28 teams at the Northern Road Relay
Championships held at Wytheshawe Park,
Manchester on Saturday. They were led off by Jack Crook who finished in
7th place, in a time of 10.16 which was the 10th fastest of the day.
Matty Callaghan(11.09) dropped 2 places to 9th, whilst Michael
Packwood(10.57) on the final leg maintained that position to the end.
With all 3 making their debuts in road relays, such a result will boost
their confidence for races in the months ahead. At U15 level, James
Grundy (9.33) was the pick of the runners,
finishing 6th on leg 1. James Loftus(10.30) & Charlie Watkinson(10.56)
brought the team home in 14th place. Jonathon Bride who was in our (B)
team in fact the only one from the (B) team who decided to run
irrespective of other team mates who had dropped out, well done
Jonathon.
Both teams were 2nd Merseyside
clubs in their age groups.
