Michael Rimmer’s Olympic dream came to an abrupt end as he failed to survive the first round of the 800m in London. Taking the lead he displayed confidence but in the inevitable charge down the home straight he faded to fifth in what for him was the very modest time of 1.49.05. In spite of a year that has included surgery for a groin injury he refused to offer excuses. He maintained that his preparation had gone well, particularly in the training camp in Portugal. He stated ‘…There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m over the injuries and in great condition. I executed the race plan but when I went into top gear it wasn’t there…it should have been straightforward for me to qualify’.
Wth commendable honesty the former European silver medallist now has to pick up the pieces of his career and start again. His friends and supporters in LPS will be with him all the way.
