Mid-Lancs success at Witton Park

Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton again enjoyed a successful day of athletics at Witton Park, Blackburn in the second track & field meeting of Mid-Lancashire clubs. There was a record turnout of club athletes with 63 taking part. The club finished 3rd in both male & female competitions behind host club, Blackburn & Preston Harriers.
A reliable core of athletes almost guarantee first place finishes and they didn’t disappoint again. Matt Ingram (SM) won both long (6.28m) & triple jump (12.95m), Kai Finch (U17M) won the high jump (1.80m), Sandy Clarkson U15B high jump (1.52m), Lauren Lewis (U17W) won both her events, 100m in 12.9 sec & long jump with a leap of 5.35m, as did Alice Prescott in the triple jump (9.79m) and 300 metres (44.7)
Joe Houghton (U17M) set a new personal best performance in the 800m (2:04.3), as did Adam Jones in the 1500m (4:19.1) as they both came 2nd in their respective races. Ciaran Scroggie also continues to improve as seen by his performance in coming 2nd in U17M 100m (11.9).
However, the most pleasing aspect of the day was the progress being shown by a number of athletes in the U13 & U15 age groups. Harry Steele (U15B) was the fastest over 200m (26.4) & Mark Roberts ran his fastest ever 800m (2:17.1) in finishing 3rd. In the same age group, Olivia Evans Yates had an outstanding leap of 4.66m in the long jump, while Abigael Bamber produced two AAA graded performances in the 100m (13.3.) & 75m hurdles (13.3).
There are also a number of emerging talents in the U13 age group. Shaun French ran 13.8 sec to finish 2nd in the 100m & 3rd in the long jump (4.08m), while Olivia Morgan produced two graded performances in the 100m (14.1) & 200m (29.5). Cara Tamburro’s throw of 16.52m was her best ever javelin throw.
All youngsters can now prepare for the county schools championships in a fortnight’s time in the hope of gaining selection for the county teams to compete at the English schools championships in July.

Liverpool Rock’n’ Roll marathon
A number of club athletes took part in the 5K race as part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series of races. Kevin Usher had a fine run to finish in 4th place in a time of 15.47, but it was the women who again stole the limelight with a first and second place,  Helen Sahgal won in  (17.15) and Lisa Gawthorne (17.52) was second making it another impressive performance by our ladies. (apparently the lead bike took the athletes on the wrong route which resulted in the course being slightly short) Kirsty Longley was second in the half marathon in a new pb of 82.15.
