There was only a scattering of Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes prepared to trek to Sunderland for the National Cross Country Championships. Rosie Johnson produced the best performance. Running a completely controlled race she finished fifth in the Under 15 event. After a relatively poor result in the Northern Championships her expectations might well have been expected to be low but
here she regained her confidence majestically. The club’s Junior Men, silver medallists in the Northerns, had an outside chance of joy but a severely decimated squad could only manage seventh team in spite of heroics from Mike Bride (104), Kyle Nicholls (105), David Reece(126) and Stuart Haw(130). Two similarly brave souls appeared in the U17 race, James Loftus(128) and Jonathan Bride(150) with ultra-loyal Sammy Rashid finishing 586th in the Senior Men’s race. Results
The conditions for the Standish 10K Trail Race were good and times were significantly better than the previous year. Kirst Longley stormed to another impressive victory finishing sixth overall and well clear of other female opposition. Team-mate Bua Kalasiram was 69th and fifth O40 lady. A trio of redoubtable vets also found the conditions to their liking. Greg Callagahan (9) and John Wealthy (13) were first and second respectively in the Over 50 category while an even more elated Robbie Wood (23) was first O55. Results
There was drama at the National Junior Indoor Championships at Birmingham. Amelia McLaughlin’s bad luck at this venue continued and she crashed out of the Under 17 High Jump title with a modest 1.60m. Angry but undeterred her parents drove her to the more modest Open Meet at Manchester`s Sport City where she was able to scrape a late entry. Relaxed she sailed over 1.65m. Confidence restored!
