Relay medals, England call ups and a GB vest

As we transitioned from track events to road the club had a fabulous turn out in the North West Road Relay at Edge Hill last week.  In fact, LPS had circa 50 athletes across senior and junior teams in what was a great day.

The day started with immediate success as our under 11 boys team, in their 1st ever event, claimed a bronze medal in Lancashire.  Further encouraging performances from the junior contingent culminated in another bronze medal in Lancashire for our under 17 women.

The senior event was a huge success for LPS, where we had 6 men’s teams and 2 ladies teams taking part in a very competitive event. The level of participation from the club was tremendous and a huge credit to the work of Mark Wynne and Joanna Durkin, Team Captains, in doing so.

Our Senior Men “A” team finished 2nd in Lancashire and 5th overall with super runs from Ross Harrison (16:18), Luke Edwards (15:54), Se Loughlin (16:03) and Adam Jones (16:38).

6 places behind, our “B” team took 4th place overall in Merseyside, with coach Tony O’Brien producing a strong last leg in 16:42.

Specific mentions to veterans Neil Roberts and Darren Kain who ran their 1st event for LPS and fitting that Neil’s son, Mark, led the team with his Dad. The three, along with John Dickinson ran credible times.

Much was expected of our Senior ladies “A” team with Lisa Gawthorne, Elle Anderson and Kirsty Longley all in fantastic form coming into the race.  They certainly didn’t disappoint and finished 2nd overall (1st in Merseyside) with each leg getting progressively quicker as Kirsty Longley, taking over from a 19:14 by Lisa a brilliant 18:14 by Elle Anderson, powered home in 17:49 for the final leg.

Our ladies “B” team finished a strong 12th of 57, with a welcome return for Tiffany Penfold, supporting team captain, Joanna Durkin, and Rachel Yates.

Ste Bolton represents GB in the European Triathlon Multisport championships

Yet another international accolade for the club as Ste Bolton represented Great Britain in the European duathlon in Bilbao. He finished superbly at 114th of 400 competitors as he continues to go from strength to strength.

Chloe Leather takes part in world mountain trail running championship

Away from the road relays but on the same weekend, Chloe Leather finished 2nd English U23 woman in the Up-and-Down Trial Races at the World Mountain & Trail Running Championship at Hartfell.  This was a superb result for Chloe and we are hopeful that this and her consistently good performances will push her towards national selection.

Al Grant receives his 2nd England call up

Continuing the success of our veteran age group athletes, we are delighted to learn that Al Grant has received his 2nd England selection after his success in last week’s village bakery half marathon.  Another reward for continued hard work and great performances.
