Michael Rimmer, multiple winner of the UK 800m title, has had a few difficult years due to injury. The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athlete now looks to have put that behind him after a succession of good Indoor performances starting in Germany, then Ireland and recently at the televised Grand Prix meeting in Glasgow. Facing an international field he was fifth but recorded a good 1.47.67 timing which takes him to second place in the national rankings for the season. He has emphatically laid down the gauntlet to his rivals for a spot in the Olympic team for Rio.
The indefatigable Kirsty Longley went to Standish for a multi-terrain over roughly 10K. After a comfortable win in the Parbold Hill Race she was naturally favourite and did not disappoint finishing seventh overall with a time of 41.51 but nearly two minutes clear of the next female. She continues to amaze.
The local Park Runs over 5K attracted a number of LPS athletes keen to test their fitness and improve. Mark Wynne(17.29) was a clear winner in Ormskirk with young Fraser Jones(19.51) fifth. At Crosby coach Chris Hannaway surprised with third and a first time effort of 19.22. In the Princess Park race a trio of Vets showed, John Halson(O50) 9th in 19.30, Robbie Wood(O55) 12th in 19.49 and John Dobie(O65) 63rd in 23.03. While presumably on half term holiday Adam Jones competed in the Conwy version easily winning with an excellent 17.59.
The British Universities Indoor Championships were at Sheffield. Among the Edge Hill University based athletes James Loftus(Liverpool) ran a 3K in 9.15.18, Aaron Houseman(Edge Hill) ran 1500m in 4.44.30 and Tawanda Lungu(Edge Hill) leapt 9.66m in the Triple Jump.
