County Glory

As usual Liverpool Pembroke Sefton members split for the county track and field athletic championships, the Lancashire contingent heading for Blackpool and the Merseysiders to Wavertree. There were three champions at the seaside venue with Wayne Ashall retaining his 400m crown with 49.7 and Under 17 Mark Hynd taking the Discus with 29.87m, a new championship best performance. Predictably Amelia McLaughlin rose to the occasion. Representing the North West the previous week at Olympic Park she had collected silver with 1.66m and she duly repeated the height this time at Stanley Park to win gold.

Among other medallists silver went to U20 Sean Kirbride in the 1500m (4.09.6) and U15 Liam Bibby at 3000m (10.38.7). The bronze variety was appropriated by U20 Alistair Nelson (3K in 9.35.3) and super-vet Dave Brown with a Javelin throw of 38.65m. While medal-less others highly placed came away pleased including U20`s Rob Parkinson(5th in the 800m in 2.05.0) and Ryan Blackwell(5th in the 1500m in 4.18.2), U17`s James Loftus (4th in the 3K with 9.54.4) and Hammer thrower, Corey Cooper (5th with18.43m). U15 Evelyn Smalley made the 100m Final (8th in 13.7) while Jack Crook posted a personal best of 4.47.7 for the 1500m.

Things were even more bountiful at the Merseyside Championships. Joseph Milton, a pupil at Birkdale School, smartly collected the U15 100m(12.24) and 200m(24.35). In the same age group Rosie Johnson continued her inexorable progress shrugging off the opposition at 1500m in 4.48.59. Georgina Hannaway collected a long overdue title winning the U17 800m in 2.34.17 and Amy Aitchinson the Discus gold(15.17m). Three champions at U20 emerged, Andrew Williams(400m in 51.43) and the Dorans, no relationship, were victorious. Ruth first in the Shot with 10.12m and Kate the High Jump with 1.60m. There were five runners up medals with U13 Matt Richardson on a 5.09.17 1500m, U17 James Grundy (800m in 2.06.45) plus U20`s Rob Orkney (200m in 24.10) and Ruth Doran again (Hammer with 32.35). Nathan Hilton additionally harvested silver in the senior 400m in 50.10. Three bronzes were awarded to U15 Mia Blair (100m in 13.55), Amy Aitchison (Javelin with 23.46m) and U17 Alicia Burke (3rd in the 800m with 2.44.81).

The county medal count… Gold 11, Silver 7 and Bronze 5. A decent weekend for LPS but it wasn’t over! Kirsty Longley raced to victory in the Port Sunlight 10K in a relaxed 37.46. Matt Thompson was 7th in the men`s event with 36.22.
