The Northern Under 17 Championships were held at the splendid new sports stadium at Middlesborough. There were two excellent results for Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes. The improving Jenny Pyatt was not quite at her best in the Under 17 Discus but her 38.86m was still good enough for silver. The `glass ceiling’ of 40m still eludes her but coach, Dave Brown, is convinced that will be shattered shortly. Also at U17 Ed Latimer was up against formidable opposition in the 400m and will be satisfied with bronze in a time of 50.01. Joe Milton was fourth with 50.68. Ed was also in the 200m Final recording a highly respectable 22.90 for sixth. Elsewhere Kai Finch finished sixth in the U15 High Jump on 1.60m. He will be disappointed with this as he has been going 10cm plus higher in training. Nevertheless he remains a fine prospect. Ed`s younger brother Sam also made the trip and has to be pleased with making two U13 Finals, 6th in the 100m(13.50) and an even better fourth in the 200m(27.84).
LPS coaches have begun to regularly include the Saturday morning Ormskirk 5K Park Run in their training schedules and to good effect. The latest involved nine club athletes who, not unsurprisingly, took the first six slots. Harry Doran dislikes running in the pack and was fast away before others could draw breath. He was never seriously challenged and cruised home in 17.01. Not far away though was one of the season`s surprise packets, Kyle Nicholls who made some inroads on the middle lap but had ultimately to yield to the Doran class in a time of 17.16. Probably the most encouraging run came from Jonathan Bride in a grimly determined 17.30 with vet, Mark Wynne closing him down gradually in 17.41. Peter Gaskell(18.12) and Jack Crook (18.32) completed the first half dozen and there was also on hand Daniel Wright, 10th in 19.12 and Steve Lennon, 12th in 19.25. To complete a very satisfactory occasion the improving Charlotte Mawdsley was first female, 25th in 21.33.
Earlier in the week at Stretford in the Trafford Graded Meeting a group were chasing late season bests. At 800m Jonathan Bride was quickest with 2.00.4. The impressive Matt Richardson ran 2.03.8 and there were a string of others on song, Joe Martin(2.10.47), Adam Jones(2.14.4) and Joe Houghton(2.17.74). Kyle Nicholls set about successfully to beat his best 1500m and did so with 4.09.24 which would have been faster had he had a clear run. Young Daniel Jones probably had the most to be overjoyed though as he completed 3000m in stunning 9.33.17. Finally in the throws Jenny Pyatt prepared herself for the Northern Championships with a Discus pitch of 37.48m but also had an equally good Shot Putt of 11.61m.
