Seniors clinch third place

Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton’s senior team clinched third place on their return to division 2 of the Northern League.
The meeting was held in glorious sunshine at the newly refurbished Wavertree Athletics centre in Liverpool. The event was won by a strong combined team from the Isle of Man (402), with last year’s winners, Leigh Harriers, second on 384.5 and LPS in third place (368), but ahead of hosts Liverpool Harriers (333), Blackpool (297) and Manchester Harriers (275.5)
The meeting started on a high with maximum points achieved in the women’s long jump. Lauren Lewis won the ‘A’ event (5.38m) and a personal best from Erin Birchall (5.25m) won the ‘B’ event. Matt Ingram continued his excellent form in the jumps with victory in the long jump (6.86m) and triple jump (13.33m). He was well supported in the triple jump by the ever improving Marcus Bathie with a leap of 10.22m which clinched 2nd place in the ‘B’ event. Marcus also finished 2nd in the 400m hurdles with his best ever time of 64.9 sec. Owen Southern’s leap of 1.85m in the high jump was only good enough for second place but Tom Kwissa won the ‘B’ event with 1.75m.
The male sprinters can always be relied upon for points. Billy Matthews achieved maximum points in both 100m (11.5) & 200m (23.0) ‘B’ events, while Danny Higham (49.5) was 2nd in the ‘A’ 400m, but Harry Doran won the ‘B’ event ((50.7). With the edition of Luke Edwards they won both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Luke had earlier won the 800m race(1:55.8), ably supported by James Metcalfe with a second place finish (1:59.7) in the ‘B’ race.
The club’s male throwers are very much in the veteran stage of their careers but can more than hold their own. Mark Line was 2nd in the hammer (32.15m), 3rd in the discus (31.73m) and won both the ‘B’ javelin (43.99m) and shot (10.11m). Dave Brown was 3rd in the shot (10.39m) but won both the ‘B’ hammer (24.43m) & discus (31.65m). youngster, Will Hynd had an excellent throw in the javelin (45.88m) to take 4th place. The female throwers are a much younger breed, and they too had a successful day. Jenny Pyatt won the discus (40.47m) & was 3rd in the shot (10.28m). Newcomer, Paula Murray, won the javelin with a throw of 34.06 metres and Lucy Wroblewski secured valuable points with 2nd place in the ‘B’ javelin (23.54m) & 3rd place in the ‘B’ discus (18.15m)
However, the club was indebted to a number of under 17’s who competed at senior level for the first time. They included Jamie Hopkins (long jump), Scarlet Whitfield & Aurora Dunne (400m & triple Jump), Jessica Groves (hammer & shot), Imogen Ayres (high jump), Hannah Doyle (3K), Jenny Williamson & Phoebe Lucas (1500m). They all contributed valuable points to ensure the club finished in third place and made it a very successful day.  Results
