The Northern League(2W) season kicked off at Blackpool for LPS’s seniors. Once again there was a traditional poor start with many events simply not covered and the club slumped to fifth out of six teams on the day. History suggests that this will not be the same at the end of the season but disappointing nonetheless. Winners were thin on the ground but the Adam Thomson(22.6) and Rob Orkney(23.7) double act shone and Kate Doran sailed over 1.60m comfortably. The relay squads duly collected, Orkney, Thomson, Wayne Ashall and Andrew Williams combined at 4 x 100m in 45.1 and Ashall, Thomson, Williams and Rob Parkinson took the 4 x 400m in 3.34.7. Voted the best finish of the day by the Track Judges, though, was the 1500m in which Jai Vernon-McGuigan looked to have the race in the bag until Sean Kirkbride produced an astonishing finish to take the race in 4.12.4 just ahead of Jai on 4.12.8. The club went to Eccles with a severely depleted team but as this was the pattern for everybody else the club emerged from the end of the afternoon relieved to find itself in 3rd spot behind Warrngton and Macclesfield. Numerous individuals sliced lumps off their PB`s and there were several good ranked efforts. U17 Mark Hynd led the way with an excellent 11.84m Shot Putt to add to a Discus Throw of 30.46m. Also in the same age group Ryan Blackwell recorded a 2.04.7 800m and Holly Lewis long jumped 4.35m. At U15 Mia Blair looked sharp at 100m with 13.2 and Joe Milton scored an impressive win over 300m, a new event, in 38.6 carrying him automatically into the upper reaches of the UK rankings. In the lower age group of U13 the high jumpers came into the picture with Kai Finch clearing 1.36m and Nina Nickson recording 1.33m. Morag Molyneux reminded us again of her potential with a 1200m in 4.09.3.
