Merseyside Schools Cross Country
On a cold, wet morning a number of club athletes ran in the Merseyside schools’ races at Clarkes Gardens on Saturday 8th December. Although conditions under foot were very heavyin parts of the course, all athletes put in creditable performances and some achieved top ten finishes.
In the under 16 boys, Jake Helm who is slowly regaining full fitness, finished 4th and was followed home by Mike Bride(9th) and Chris Hatton (16th), the latter two competing a year under the age group. In the under 13 boys, there was a strong run from Kyle Nicholls who finished in 6th place; Darren McDonald finished in 11th. The lone competitor in the under 14 boys was Matthew Scragg also finished 11th.
Another sparkling run from Kirsty
The final Liverpool and District Cross Country League match was at Arrowe Park. Kirsty Longley turned in another outstanding performance in finishing 56th in a largely Men’s race but the best female in the field by over two minutes. She stuck doggedly to her task running well within herself and helped by LPS veteran Jeff Mason who finished two places in front of her. Bernie Murphy improved slightly to 7th spot while Adam Clansey paid for his initial impetuosity by fading to 18th. Paul Rudkin is slowly turning himself into a cross country runner once again finishing well in 102nd place. The club’s attentions will now be turning to the post-Christmas championship races.

Rimmer Britain’s Number 1
The end of the year athletics rankings will make pleasant reading for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton 800m star, Michael Rimmer. His status as Britains No 1 is again confirmed with a time of 1.45.17 recorded at Stockholm in August plus a string of other sub-1.46 clocking that places him well clear of his domestic rivals. This time ranks him overall 27th in the World but he will take heart from the fact that he is less than two seconds away from the World leader Malaudzi of South Africa. Still only 21 Rimmer should have a sub 1.45 posting well within his sights in the 2008 season. The Beijing Olympics also beckon.
Rimmer is not the only LPS athlete in the charts. Ormskirk’s Phil Taylor’s 400m times of 47.54 indoors and 48.28 outdoors carry him into the British list at 28th. Taylor made a tremendous start to 2007 when he gained a European gold medal indoors as part of the successful GB 4 x 400m relay squad. Subsequent injury curtailed his outdoor season leaving him extremely frustrated. However, the Loughborough student’s winter training is going well and a sub-47 time should be comfortably within his grasp as the summer campaign gets underway.
