NoEAA Road Relays 1 & 2 October
A weekend of road relays saw Liverpool Pembroke Sefton`s Under 15 and Under 17 teams contest the North of England Championships at Sefton Park whilst their senior counterparts where similarly engaged at Blackpool`s Stanley Park. The Under 15 team were the most succesful finishing a good ninth but first Merseyside club in a tough field. Jake Helm, Mike McCarten and Chris Hesketh were the determined trio. The Under 17s made a bright start as Andrew Bowen came home ninth but Joe McKenna and Rob McLoughlin slipped to 19th. The B team was virtually breathing down their necks in 24th place with Sam Hutchinson, an inspired Martin Cooke and Danny Gorden. Missing three key members the senior 6-stage team were bound to struggle. As usual star Jimmy Boardman led off in 5th place with a quick 14.51, Sammy Rashid dropped to 14th in 16.22 and Steve Donegan to 26th in 17.28. Team management decided to give the next three places to the youngest members Chris Melling(17.49), David Wilkie(18.40) and Matt Brooks(18.29). This was valuable experience but they slid inevitably to 49th. Star performance though came from veteran B team runner, Greg Callaghan(17.16) who surprised even himself with his early season fitness.
