A successful 2021 track season for Mark Roberts

Despite the persistent interruption of competition and the difficulties in accessing tracks during the last eighteen months LPS’s under 17 athlete Mark Roberts was still able to record a very successful 2021 track season  In his first year in the under 20 age group Mark Roberts competed well in both the Northern Championships at Leigh and the National Championships at Bedford.

However, a podium finish with a 400m bronze at the English Schools Championships in Manchester in July in a personal best time of 48.4 seconds, earned Mark an invitation from England Athletics to represent his country in a 4 x 400m relay at the Manchester International. This event took place at the Etihad Athletics stadium in mid-August.

Mark was never going to miss such an opportunity and even returned from his family holiday in Spain three days early in order to join the squad the day before the meeting! Never having run a baton race before and with the measured support of his coach Mark Bleasdale, he took it all in his stride with a third leg split time just outside his PB. This helped the young England quartet to secure a convincing win on the night with an International gold medal being the ‘icing on the cake’ to a fine season. Well done Mark!
