I feel the need for speed …

Our very own set of Mavericks started the week off with supersonic performances at the Trafford Open Meeting.

Adam Jones continuing his strong comeback completed another sub 2 minute 800m  finishing in 1:58.95.  Tony O’Brien competing in 1500m set himself a target of 4:20 for the season opener and achieved this in 4:19.56.

Top Gun, however, goes to Ross Harrison who smashed his 3000 m PB by over 20 seconds to finish in 8:25.57.

On Wednesday evening John and Jake Dickinson donned the LPS vests with Greg Callaghan and took part in the Astley Park Trail race.  With Winston the dog looking on, Jake finished 4th overall in 21:34.  Greg, achieved a personal milestone by finishing ahead of a long standing masters athlete, which made the event more satisfying.  John completed our trio by finishing in 25:22.

At the weekend we had a number of athletes across the region taking part in various competitions.  Southport parkrun was graced by the presence of Kirsty Longley, Andrew Foster and Joanna Durkin, all finishing in the top ten , all sub 20 mins and Kirsty finishing in 1st place overall.

Down the road at Kew Woods, Mark Hudson and Phil McDonald showed tremendous team ethic as Phil sacrificed a certain win (who says park run isn’t a race!) to help pace Mark in a sub 20.

Once again it was great to see a number of our team take part in the Halewood 5k.  Our friends a Knowsley Harriers hold the event monthly for a very good cause (The Walton Centre).  Tony O’Brien in 2nd place overall finished 6 seconds behind the leader in 16:16 with Lisa Gawthorne 1st lady in 19:02.   Debutant Ste Bolton broke the 20 minute barrier in 19:37 with Club Chairman Robbie Wood finishing 4th in V60 category in 24:02.

Over at Ormskirk Chris Maher took 25 seconds off his course PB with a first finish in 16:11 ahead of Donegal’s newest 50 year old Thomas Harkin in 3rd place with an 18:03 finish. This was a warm up for Tom who went on to celebrate his new found “50 status” with a 1st in the V50 category in the Edenfield Fell race.

Mid Lancs League Results

Some great performances on Saturday at Hyndburn.

Dan Evans (12.9) and Mark Line (13.3) in 100m  with Mark also finishing 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 4.81m and in the discus at 32.65m. Mark clearly enjoys throwing things as he also achieved 38.89 m in the javelin.

Sandy Clarkson achieved 1st place in the senior men high jump clearing 1.9m.

Dave Brown continues to show great leadership by example with credible performances in the shot putt (8.49m) , Hammer (27:57m) and discus (26.18m).

In the u17m 400m Harrison May-Joynson won the event and finished 4 seconds ahead of second place with a time of 53.1.

In the 800m, James read achieved 2:13.9 and finished 4th.

Pocket dynamo William Roberts, bursting with enthusiasm, seemed to take part in any event he could, in each one pulling off good performances. He finished 1st in 100m in 15.0, 6th in the 800m at 2:47 and 4th in the long jump.  Not bad for a 10 or 11 year old in the under 13 category!!

Debbie Dasse (32.3) and Laura Purdy (34.3) finished 4th and 5th in the senor ladies 200m with Debbie then going on to win the high jump in 1:49.

In the u17 women High jump Millie O’Hanlon took 1st place with a jump of 1:62m. This was followed up by Dakota Backhouse who finished 2nd in the U15 girls high jump with 1:40m.

And finally ….. on Sunday in awful conditions Greg Callaghan and Stuart Ord completed the Runcorn bridge 10k.  Both cracked the 40 minute threshold with Greg in 28th place at 39:33 and Stuart 31st in 39:48.   Don’t forget to pay the toll guys, the £2 per crossing charge has to be paid in 24 hours or it gets very expensive, as I found out…

Well done everyone, look forward to the Northerns next weekend – See your coach if you haven’t already registered for an event – it’s at Edge Hill.
