Championships Reports From Merseyside Schools &
Liverpool & District 6/7 February
The Liverpool and District Cross Senior Country Championships were
held as usual at Clarke Gardens and attracted a slightly larger than
normal field. There have been signs this season of a mild recovery
in Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton's fortunes and this was again in
evidence. Fifth team overall did not tell the entire story as eleven
LPS men faced the starter.
There does seem to be a decline though in school numbers. At the
Merseyside Championships in Arrowe Park the fields were thin. In the
Junior Boys James Grundy was 5th and both the Inters and Seniors
provided a trio of LPS members.

Class
performance from Rhea 23 January
For the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton contingent attending the Northern
Cross Country Championships at Blackburn's Witton Park there was no
argument about the day's best performance. Still on a high from
gaining her first representative vest Rhea Ellis took on the elite
of the region's Under 20 Women and was consistently in the leading
bunch. She tackled the infamous terrain with huge confidence and
determination and in a pulsating finish closed rapidly on the fading
third medallist failing only by a handful of seconds for the bronze.

Rhea collects a representative vest 17
January
The UK Cross Country Challenge races attract the best in the country
and Cardiff was no exception. Running for the North in her first
Under 20 representative match Rhea Ellis finished a great 8th barely
a minute off the winning time. No team results yet but it looks like
she may well have collected a silver medal as third counter in the
Northern team. Her confidence will be boosted for the coming
weekend's Northern Championships at Blackburn.

First Northern medal of the season 17 January
The
ice having receded it was back to business for the Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton club. In preparation for the following week's
Northern Champs the harrier section were at Blackpool for a Mid-Lancs
League fixture. Two individual and two team victories characterised
the day. At Under 15 Alistair Nelson continued his winning ways
towing Kyle Nicholls(11), James Grundy(12) and Warren Turner(13) to
an easy team win. To cap a good performance and emphasise depth in
strength George Curran(19), Dave Reece(29), Robert Parkinson(31) and
Darren McDonald(32) closed in fourth team. The Under 17s provided an
almost identical result, Toby Loveridge striding home first and with
Jai Vernon-McGuigan(5) and Mike Bride(10) ensuring another team win.
Sean Kirkbride(14), Michael Wilson(16) and Ed Rimmer(18) were 5th
team. Read More

Alistair
conquers the snow 9th January
Lancashire was one of the very few counties that managed to stage
their cross country championships because of the severe weather
conditions. Witton Park, Blackburn is a difficult enough course at
the best of times but the snow made it even more hazardous.
Burscough's Alistair Nelson was not deterred in the least by this
and was always in control of the Under 15 race running side by side
with Blackpool's Ben Everson before kicking away over the last 800m
to win comfortably by ten seconds.

Rhea sparkles at Burnley 19 December
With the post-Christmas championships looming Liverpool Pembroke
Sefton runners took advantage of the Mid-Lancs Cross Country League
match at Burnley's Townley Park for a final work out. In the Senior
Women's race Rhea Ellis demonstrated that she has definitely
recaptured the confidence and panache of her younger years to come
home second and raise expectation for the County and Northern
Championships in January. She also recorded her first win over club
mate Kirsty Longley who put in her usual fighting performance but a
minute adrift in fourth spot. Read

Strong performance from Toby Loveridge 12
December
Running in the Merseyside Schools Cross Country League at Wavertree
Toby Loveridge turned in another fine performance winning the Senior
race by 50 yards from LPS team mate Jai Vernon-McGuigan.
The final Liverpool and District League match took place on a muddy
Beacon Park. The club turned out nine runners yet again but still
way off full strength. Newcomer triathlete Ian Roberts looked
comfortable in finishing a highly creditable 13th with Chris Pedder
23rd. Read More

Jack leads the way on a good day 28 November
The
UK Cross Country Challenge series of events reached Sefton Park
again and incorporates the European Trials. It thus attracts some of
the best harriers in the country. This year the mud made it a very
demanding course but, as usual, produced one or two pleasant
surprises for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton contingent. In the first
race, the Under 11s, Jack Crook was always in the leading group and
not overawed by the occasion finished in an excellent 8th spot. The
St Annes Ormskirk Primary School pupil will certainly progress from
this. Other team mates were Paul Bousique(30), Charlotte
Mawdsley(59) and Colin Bousique(65).
Again one of the joys of this season has been the emergence of a
strong Senior Womens group led by Kirsty Longley(60) with Lyndsay
Doyle(68) and Cath Terry(102) also in attendance. This performance
will carry them to a very high placing in the Mid-Lancs team
results. Read More

Steve Roger 1934-2009
I have just learnt of the death earlier this year of Steve Roger.
Steve was one of that fine group of distance runners to come out of
Sefton Harriers in the mid 1950s.
The son of an Irish international
and Sefton Harrier President Teddy Rogers he was the seventh of nine
children, all the sons running for Sefton Harriers. A pupil at St
Oswald’s primary and then St Edwards he later won a sport
scholarship to Idaho University where he studied politics and
statistics..
Steve won both junior and senior West Lancashire cross country
titles in 1950 & 60s and was a contemporary of the great Kenny Gates
of Pembroke.

Kirsty and Jai shine 15 November
Kirsty Longley and Jai Vernon-McGuigan love to compete and both had
a great weekend. Over in Ireland for the annual Hollymount Road
Races Kirsty was second in a class field of runners in the Women`s
3K race. She was the leader of the Liverpool contingent who always
make the trip and but a mere 18 seconds in 10.39 behind Irish
international Kathryn Casserly. Kirsty goes from strength to
strength.
Meanwhile in the Merseyside Schools Cross Country League Jai was
dominating the Senior Boys race on a very demanding and windswept
coastal course that included negotiating sand dunes. Vernon-McGuigan
could be one to watch as this winter season unfolds.

West Lancashire Junior Sports Personality of the Year 2 November
Burscough's Alistair Nelson has had an amazing year. From winning
the Lancashire Under 15 Cross Country title to fourth in the English
Schools Championships he proceeded thence to an English vest and a
member of the gold medal winning team in the international match in
North Wales. This has now been recognised locally and he has been
voted West Lancashire Junior Sports Personality of the Year in front
of a packed audience at Edge Hill University's Rose Theatre. He
follows in the steps of Wayne Ashall who has achieved a similar
honour. Michael Rimmer received the senior runner-up award to Fran
Halsall, the international swimmer.

International Festival of Athletics Coaching,
Glasgow 2 November
Ray Twentyman and Trish Farrell were invited to this highly
prestigious gathering. They heard lectures from Sergey Bubka, Wilson
Kipketer, Seb Coe and contributions from many other national and
international sources. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative
experience for our star coach sprint duo and recognition of their
success in producing athletes of the highest level.

Women shine again at Mansfield 31 October
The English Cross Country Relay Championships are traditionally seen
as a guide to the post-Christmas championships and are keenly
fought. Again it was largely a day for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton
girls to flourish. Although teamless Rhea Ellis made the trip to
test herself against the country's best Juniors and emerged with a
magnificent 9th placing and reminding spectators of the potential
she displayed as a youngster. Read

LPS recovery in men's
distance running? 24 October
Although Liverpool Pembroke Sefton
have achieved an astonishing range of success over all
disciplines senior men's distance running has for many years
been in the doldrums. Even the women's equivalent is prospering
but stubbornly the men have stood still. At the first of the
Liverpool and District League cross country matches in Arrowe
Park there was a hint that this corner could be turned. Although
still heavily reliant on vets the club finished a respectable
fourth behind local rivals Liverpool Harriers, Wirral AC and
Southport Waterloo.

Fantastic four flourish at Sutton Park 18
October
The bare results will show that in the National Road Relay
Championships at Sutton Park, Birmingham the Liverpool Pembroke
Sefton senior women's quartet finished 32nd.But that is only a small
part of the story as this was the first time ever that the club had
fielded a team at this level. Little could have been expected but
the first stage runner, the ever reliable Kirsty Longley, ran a
great 15.45 in 37th place and in close proximity to a galaxy of
talent.
Also report on Young Athletes Road relays and links to results
Bernie Murphy at Abingdon
While the club was occupied at Sutton Park Bernie Murphy made the
trip to Abingdon and completed the Marathon there in a very
respectable 2.43.08. He was 10th in the race and fifth Vet overall.
Obviously still plenty of fire in the old war horse!Read More

Cautious start to the cross country season
11th October
The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes were at two venues for a
relatively cautious opening to the cross country season. The
Merseyside Schools at Croxteth Park unexpectedly attracted large
fields with Toby Loveridge and David Forrester attempting a first
place dead heat after destroying the Under 18 field. Jai
Vernon-McGuigan(5), Ed Rimmer(9) and Chris Hesketh(10) completed the
LPS interest in this age group. Toby, David, Ed and Chris
additionally secured a comfortable team victory for KGV Southport.

Superb performances from Kirsty and Greg 4
October
The Asics Liverpool 10K at Sefton Park attracted over 2000 runners
and proved yet another opportunity for Liverpool Pembroke Sefton
star Kirsty Longley to shine. Still not back into full training she
recorded a fine time of 37.42 and fought off tough challenges to
come home third woman. Club mate Greg Callaghan is in equally
outstanding form and will be delighted with a 9th place time of
35.03 which enabled him to collect the first over 45 prize.
Elsewhere Sean Dignam was 19th in 38.10.
