League Report
The track and field season has begun to shift up a gear just prior to the county championships. Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes are beginning to evaluate the effects of the tough winter training programmes. The Junior(Under 20) team were at Bebington stadium for their second fixture. The powerful women`s throwing squad  continue to amass points with Becky Keegan a three event winner in the Javelin A(26.99m), Hammer B(28.33) and Discus B(16.38) and Natalie Walsh collecting a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Discus(34.76m), Shot(8.43) and Hammer(28.50) respectively. Anna Taylor also got in the act with a Javelin B 1st(25.94m). For the men Alex Stokes had a useful double first 100m in 11.2 and 200m in 23.1. Other winners included Chris Melling 2000m Steeplechase(7.01.1)and Danny Gordon 3000m(9.49.9). But the athlete commanding most attention was newcomer Jacob Shaw with his High Jump wins of 1.85m and Triple Jump of 11.56m plus a third place Pole Vault of 2.90m, all personal bests. As usual LPS came good late in the afternoon with useful relay points to overtake the Cheshire Tigers club for top spot locally. At Wakefield the Senior Men and Women made a welcome return to to Division 1 of the Northern League. Here there were no fewer than 16 individual first placings plus a brace of male 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay wins. As usual Dave Readle and decathletes Mark Line and Jon Rice were prolific in collecting first, second and third placings across the card. International Michael Rimmer returned to action with comfortable wins in the 1500m and second string 800m events. The women were not at full strength but battled on heroically. The joint scoring system does not favour the local club and the overall placing of 5th does not reflect the true quality of both the men and women who train at Edge Hill College. Nevertheless an impressive start. The only thing certain is that they will climb this table.

County Track & Field Championships
Although the county track and field championships still continue to decline in support they remain a significant indicator of the season ahead. Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes headed in different directions according to qualification, Merseyside at Wavertree and the Lancashire championships at Blackpool. LPS collected 9 first placings in Liverpool. Jacob Shaw won the junior men`s Pole Vault with 2.90m and Mark Leicester the Long Jump with 6.08m. Under 20 Alex Stokes added a brilliant 11.3 100m win to his silver in the 200m. Also collecting gold in the same category was Danny Gordon in the 3000m(9.58.1). David Forrester took the Under 15 800m easily in 2.07.6, while colleague Chris Hesketh was equally untroubled in the 1500m(4.26.9). Among the girls Rachel Hutchinson strode home in the Under 17 300m in 49.4 and Becky Keegan out threw the rest in the Javelin with 28.14m. At Under 15 Emma Carter was also a class apart with a winning spear of 22.96m.
The first day of the Lancashire`s provided the club with 4 more champions. Tony West had a double win in the Under 15 Discus(31.13m) and Hammer(35.42m), the latter a championship best performance. Junior woman Javelin thrower Anne-Marie Pennington recorded 33.03m. At Under 15 Jake Helm replicated Chris Hesketh`s 1500m win at Wavertree but with a quicker time of 4.24.0. Finally Wayne Ashall took the Under 17 400m with yet another personal best of 51.30. His journey towards sub-50 seconds continues to intrigue. Natalie Walsh picked up the gold medal on Sunday in the junior women’s discus with a throw of 34:98
She was disappointed with her performance of 34.98 and was on form to beat the record previously set for the junior women. It was not to be unfortunately feeling ill that weekend, the GP diagnosed pharyngitis and ended up on antibiotics within a couple of days of the comp…..that is all part of athletics!!! Natalie was not pleased…. next time perhaps!)
