Blackpool wins for both Stewarts
LPS had athletes turnout in  numbers at the Mid Lancs cross country at Blackpool. Alan Stewart won the under 17s  event and lead the team to victory with Chris Watson 4th and Michael Rimmer 5. Not to be outdone the under 15s also won with a score of 33 beating our close rivals SWAC who scored 70. Robert Stocks lead home the team in 4th place followed by David Wilkie 6, Tom McCarten 11 and Steven Blackhurst 12. The under 13s came second to Blackpool with Ben Johnson 3, Andrew Bowden 11, Robert Bland16 and new boy Tom Dodd 18. Henry Stewart running as well as ever won the Under 20 event and lead the LPS lads to another victory with Tom Wade 6 and Steve Donague 8. Luke Sanders was 16 in the senior race.

Bernie 2nd at Walton Park 4
Bernie Murphy held off the strong challenge from team mate Brian Currie to clinch 2nd place at the Walton Park 4 mile. The race was won by Tony O’Brian of Morpeth. Bernie was backed up by Paul Cadwallader 6th and Joey Parkinson 8th LPS once again packed the top end of this popular road race. Cheryl Lucas making one of her few appearance this winter came home in 57th. Numbers seemed to be down reflecting a worrying trend for local race organisers.

New PB for Sammy at Sheffield 10k
Sammy Rashid stepped up his training and improved his PB for 10k 31.44. His times for this same event over the last three years reflect his improvement 32-50 (last year), 32-45 in 1999 and 32-31in 1990. finishing 7th overall in a quality field Sammy is very pleased with his run.” I’m sure a few people won’t believe the time I did…I know I don’t believe it. I’d say you can add 30 secs on for the fast course” said a modest Sammy.

Courtney second under 20 at Edinburgh
Courtney Birch came second in the under 20’s race and finished 19th overall. Running for an England under 23 team although still a very young under 20 she ran well in this top class field. Henry Stewart also made the long journey to compete for the North of England he was 70th overall in the mixed senior/junior field. Chris Watson came 23rd in the under 17 event, Robert Walmsley was 49. Andrew Donaldson closed the team in finishing 55. Robert Stocks was 16 in the under 15s event, David Wilkie was 36th, Tom McCarten was 50th and Thor Andersen 53.

Cheryl Lucas wins Christmas handicap
On a very cold morning only 14 athletes made it to the start line for the Club Christmas handicap. First off at the stroke of eleven on the church clock was club chairman Mary Dean, one of only two ladies in the field this year. The other was handicap winner Cheryl Lucas. Fastest time once again was run by Sammy Rashid who this year ran 22.05, club captain Jim Eden was second fastest with 23.18 and Graham Cairns third fastest with 23.23.

Girl’s Christmas Handicap
All things considered we were delighted to have 12 athletes competing at the Christmas Handicap on the 23rd December. The winner of the handicap was Jenny Bear, one of our up and coming U13 stars. The fastest time on the day was run by Nikki Bear (Jenny’s older sister)!
